"Forgiveness:
10 Steps To Giving It and Getting It"
September 24, 2008
"Forgiving someone means that we find the strength to go beyond ourselves to a
place that helps us see those who have hurt us in a new way. That's never easy.
Seeking forgiveness requires us to confront the past, see what we have done
wrong, and commit to changing our behavior. That's huge. But like the ability to
forgive others, it is within our grasp…."

"It's My Body And I'll Cut If I Want To"
September 24, 2008
"If John McCain and Sarah Palin believe that human life begins at conception,
then they should not only support overturning Roe [ v.Wade], but contrary to
their stated position, should oppose individual states having the right to
permit abortion as well ... Consistency demands that McCain and Palin admit that
as soon as Roe is overturned, they will look for legal means to assure that no
abortion is ever permitted in this country for any reason. That's pretty scary
to me. But having said that, I loathe the legal logic behind Roe and think it
has done a great deal of harm…."

Newsweek/Washington Post's "On Faith" blog "Economic Crisis:
Some Are Guilty All Are Responsible"
September 22, 2008
"Our economy's recent and yet to be financial failures, the likes of which we
have not seen since the Depression, are profound moral failures. Anytime a
society has millions of people lose their homes and jobs, major institutions
disappear over night, and its citizens experience unprecedented levels of
insecurity, uncertainty, and anxiety about the future there is a moral issue
with moral implications… no great moral or spiritual insight is required to know
that the moral failure that has led to our present crisis is as old as human
beings - in a word GREED - and it would be far too easy for any "us" to simply
blame some other "them" and thereby deflect and project our responsibility on
someone else...."

"Sorting Sins: When the Law Stays the Same and Everything Else Changes"
September 22, 2008
"It has long been the claim of the Orthodox community that Jewish law does not
or should not change to accord itself with the times. Among certain Jews, since
the early 19th century, all new things are considered a priori forbidden.
Despite this oft-repeated and historically questionable insistence on formal
continuity, there are ways that prohibitions of sinful behavior can remain on
the books unchanged in their form, and still be wholly transformed in their
social effect…."

"Rabbis use high holidays to make ethics a part of kosher"
September 23, 2008 "...Rabbi Brad Hirschfield … said religious leaders should encourage adherents to learn from each other, rather than view this debate [over ethical kosher certification] as one group forcing its values onto the entire community. ‘Agriprocessors is the stage on which different religious and political factions have been playing out their issues,’ he said. ‘The real issue as we come to Yom Kippur, which is about forgiveness and repentance, is are we going to regard each other's understandings about what it means to keep kosher in a forgiving and understanding way?’…
